Healthy living is something my colleagues and I take very seriously. When we were asked if we wanted to participate in the California Inter-national Marathon in order to raise points for our school, Chrystal, Ange-la, and I didn’t hesitate for a second. We would gladly do it! Music teacher Megan Cooper (featured in an earlier newsletter) joined our team, and the four of us trained for a few months before the big day. None of us were big marathon runners, but we were excited for the opportunity. It turned out to be amazing!
We have always tried to incorporate the ideals of good nutrition, sleep, and exercise into our daily lives. One practice the three of us follow is packing our lunch each day instead of going out to eat, ensuring that we get proper nutrition. If we want to optimize our energy, what we put in our bodies needs to be packed with nutrients. Of course, that doesn’t mean we don’t indulge in the occasional pizza and ice cream. A healthy life is all about moderation and balance. Healthy living doesn’t stop with nutrition, however. Sleep, emotional, and spiritual health are critical, too. It’s hard to get enough sleep as teachers. We work crazy hours, and we have families and other engagements after school that keep us up late. At times, we feel overwhelmed with stress. To keep it in check, we coun-terbalance with stretching and getting outside whenever possible.
As for our physical activities, we all love to do them! Chrystal is an avid runner who participates in marathons and fun runs. She has a crew of friends with whom she likes to train. To keep her balanced, she also swims, stretches, and engages in exercise that works various muscle groups. Angela can be found going for walks, running, and swimming. As for me, I love to be outside! I spend my weekends in Tahoe, swimming in the lake, mountain biking, hiking, or skiing. If I can’t do my out-door activities, I like to strength train or do cardio at home. Ironically, I don’t love running, but I enjoyed training for our marathon.
As far as what we’d like to accomplish this year, we all want different things. Angela wants to lose weight, train in self-defense, and run more frequently. Chrystal is hoping to do more fun runs with friends because it’s just that: fun! She’d also like to master trail running to lessen the impact on her joints. Her ultimate goal is to do a half marathon at a national landmark. I want to ski more difficult black diamond runs when the snow is better and ride more challenging bike trails Lake Tahoe has to offer. My longest trail ride distance was 19 miles, so I’m hoping I can surpass that record. Most of all, we all want to be stronger, more toned, and more nutritionally balanced.
